"In God We Trust"

So goes the national motto. Maybe... Maybe, just maybe, we ought to actually give it a try sometime.

According to Wikipedia this phrase became the official U.S. motto in 1956 by an act of congress. That's over a half century ago. And our policy for most of that time has been to atest that it isn't true.

So, where to start, in trusting God, that is? First, I would think, is to decide just who God is. Right now we as a nation don't seem to have a clue. Is God the God of the Bible? Or Allah, perhaps? The entire Hindu pantheon? We'd better give it a real good think. Trusting in false gods brings no benefit it the long haul, just pain. Trusting in our money, our government, our enormous military power that's now spread all over the globe, our covert agencies (to "destabilize" other governments), George Bush, Barack Obama, whatever, has brought us to the brink of ruin. We had better focus on the true God. We don't have the time or resources for many more mistakes.

If we come up with, as I would certainly hope, that God is the God of the Bible, then, in order to show our trust somewhat, let's be putting the Ten Commandments back up in those places where they've been ordered taken down. This will be a start. It will show that we want to honor our God. And if some federal "justices" claim this is unconstitutional, congress can, constitutionally, remove this jurisdiction from them and/or remove these people themselves from those positions. Should congress refuse to act, they, too, can be removed from the very, very cushy offices they hold. I doubt it would come to that. It takes a brave man to face up to an aroused population. My feeling is few of these people have that kind of courage. And, after all, to continue down the same road, ignoring or, worse, attempting to shame the God who made us, will just bring more of these unpleasant consequences down on us as a nation.

Next, if we indeed are going to trust God, let's trust him to protect us. Let's start bringing our troops home from those foreign bases and quit bullying other countries. We have ten times or more the military and naval power needed to defend our shores. The campaigning George Bush promised to bring the troops home from Bosnia, but he was lying. This was maybe the first promise he reneged on. Obama was going to get us out of Iraq in sixteen months, but it's not going to happen. He was lying too, apparently. Although it's true that he's made some moves to reduce U.S. combat exposure there.

So, these are my first two steps toward making "In God we trust" our motto really. One, to show that we know who God is and begin again to give him honor, and , two, to trust him to defend us.
