Last of the Seventh

For several years-- before last August-- I had pretty much lost interest in baseball. However, when the Astros got hot last year, made that great run over the last seven or eight weeks of the regular season to capture the fourth playoff spot, I got hooked all over again. This renewed interest has carried over into this season. I've watched parts of most of the Astros' games on TV all year. One thing I haven't watched, though, is what takes place just before the last of the seventh. I started to write that this was not necessarily by design, but maybe it is. Does someone still sing "God Bless America?" at that point in major league games?

This was something baseball began doing after 9/11. It was something I didn't care much for at the time, and not at all for as months/seasons passed. Who are we to demand a blessing? Aren't there still more than a million abortions being performed in this nation each year? Who really believes that is so pleasing to God that he would care to bless us for it? What about homosexual marriage? Is this what God desires? I can't imagine it is. Cohabitation, pre-marital sex, even adultery, all are acceptable now behavior, tolerated throughout our society. Are these actions what God wants? And this is just the short list.

Why in the world should we think we deserve a blessing. How about we stop nagging God in song and just play ball. Baseball, if you're still doing this, don't.
