America and the God of Israel

This morning I was browsing World Net Daily and came across an article which said that Britain so feared offending the Muslim minority among them that they have completely caved to the point that their country is jokingly and disparagingly referred to as "Londonistan." You know, we Americans are behaving in exactly the same way. But with us it is not only Muslims, but Hispanics, including illegal aliens, homosexuals, and who knows who all. Nobody will stand up and tell them all to take their silly demands and move on along with them.

I thought back on Londonistan a bit later as my wife and I were doing our morning Bible reading. We were reading Isaiah 30. Here God was chastening Judah for trusting in an alliance with Egypt rather than trusting in God. He tells them, through Isaiah, that what they are trusting in will fail them. In verse 17 they're told, "One thousand shall flee a the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five shall ye flee..."

This scripture got me to thinking about the blessings and cursings in Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28. In these chapters are listed great blessings that were to come upon Israel if she was obedient and lived up to her covenant with God. The cursings that followed showed what would happen if she didn't.

Lev. 26:7-8 contains one of the blessings for obedience:
7. And you shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword.
8. And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight...

And in the cursings is this:
17. ... and you shall flee when none pursueth you.

We're not Israel, but at one time our forefathers pledged ourselves to the God of Israel, the God of the Bible, and to his Son. And great blessings came to our nation for years. Our motto has been, "In God We Trust." But we haven't done it, not in recent years anyway. No, we haven't been faithful to God, the One we acknowledge. What we're facing is not exactly a curse, not on the level of those Torah passages, not yet, at least. Why shouldn't we expect curses? Keep running, boys. Those few pursuing back there may be gaining on us.
